These Flowers/Staring at the Sun

by Ryan Burns

1.
Spring, it’s a wonderful time to begin again And I’ll bring all that I learned from a cold winter’s end It’s a shame I can only stare outside through the pain And window frames, but flowers only come after rain I’m a fool to think I really figured this thing out The golden rule, If I give the world my heart there’s no doubt I’ll get two, made of silver and gold and I’ll find out all about A part of you, and the prize will be worth all the sweat on my brow These words will only flow in spring my dear This heart will run dry Every year these flowers must die Icy rain and sleet and snow and tears falling down It’s the same every time a new year comes around Don’t know why it takes me by surprise when I drown In grey skies, clouds are always laughing at the ground These words will only flow in spring my dear This stream will run dry Every year these flowers must die Been lying here for hours And hours turn to days I’m tired of April showers It’s just a little rain These words will only flow in spring my dear This stream will run dry Every year these flowers must die

I’m just a man staring at the sun I wish there was another one One that wouldn’t always hide away Can’t take another rainy day The light shines but the timing’s wrong The days are tired when the nights are long Next door in another cell I hope they’re doing twice as well And when I step outside Freedom burns my eyes I know it isn’t wise But I was never wise Year from now in a Brave New World I’ll find another lonely girl Old frown and a new tattoo So free with nothing to do Til then I’ll just sit and stare Wondering if I really care My guitar’s an artificial sun Pick it up when I need someone
